My Future

When Andy was growing up in the 1960s, he was captivated by visions of a space-age future. Fictional denizens and inventors of the future, like the Jetsons, Danny Dunn, and Tom Swift were more than escapes — they were a promise. In the early 1980s, when he finally made it to LA and saw the futuristic Googie architecture that dotted the entire city, he was transfixed. It was as though the future he was expecting might actually have taken shape.

In December of 2024, Andy read an article in the New York Times about the near total demolition of Googie architecture in LA. It seems that future had run its course, and it was time for a new, and far less imaginative one to take its place.

Andy used that moment to imagine what it might have been like living in LA in the 196os and wrote a short story that wove some of his own recollections into this imagined Googie-infested landscape. He found an AI voice to read it and customized an AI image generator to illustrate it. That became the video My Future.
